Expat Michael Rault’s Living Daylight is about to see the daylight.
About time, too. He recorded the album in Edmonton — with his cousin (and fellow musician) Renny Wilson — last year. The seven-song EP, featuring the psychedelic single Lost Something, is due June 24 on Pirates Blend.
Rault, who now lives in Toronto, loses his low-fi, blues-punk sound on Living Daylight, opting for a trippier, groovier, falsetto-ier direction.
“I tried to push him into doing some weirdo stuff — stuff that I’m into,” Wilson told the Journal during a visit to his bedroom studio in 2013. “Michael’s style is: ‘If a song sounds good enough, leave it.’ Whereas I’m like: ‘Let’s put a lot of things on it and see what sounds best.’ He decides he’s done way earlier than me.”
Local fans can get a sneak peek at Rault’s new tunes when he performs at Hot Plains Music Festival — Saturday at The Pawn Shop (with The Renny Wilson Punk Explosion) — and Sunday afternoon at the Empress Ale House.
