One last blast from The Subatomics

Edmonton’s most prodigious group of (former) garage-rock teens, The Subatomics, are getting together for one last hurrah — Tuesday, Aug. 6 at Wunderbar, 8120 101 St. Tickets are $10 at the door.

The three musicians, now in their early 20s, are pursuing separate projects — and wouldn’t you know it? They put out albums within seven months of each other.

Peter Sagar, now based in Montreal, released his lo-fi debut as Homeshake, The Homeshake Tape, in January. He performs on Sunday, July 28 at Wunderbar. (He also plays guitar for expat Mac DeMarco.)

Renny/Rene Wilson was next with his pop debut, Sugarglider, on Mint Records in February. (He also produces albums for other local artists.)

And … Travis Bretzer’s five-song EP Making Love came out July 23 on Mexican Summer, one of Brooklyn’s many painfully cool labels. (He also works as a weekend host for Sonic 102.9 FM.)

The Subatomics were local sensations in the mid-’00s, playing in all-ages venues such as the Shark Tank and Ruckus, not to mention clubs like New City and the old Sidetrack Cafe — back when minors could still perform in 18-plus rooms. (The Alberta government changed the law in 2007 — the same year the trio broke up. Coincidence?)

As part of their reunion, they’ll issue their previously unreleased EP, Big Smoke.

Now all we need is Corb Lund to reform his punk-metal band, the smalls

By the way, tickets to his Sunday, July 28 show at The Starlite Room are sold out online, but still available at Permanent Records. The gig, also featuring Jr. Gone Wild, Fuzz Kings and Ann Vriend, is a fundraiser for the Red Cross’s Alberta Floods fund.

Listen to Lund’s tribute to flood survivors, Blood, Sweat & Water, on Soundcloud … or better yet, BUY IT ON iTUNES. Proceeds will also go to Red Cross.
